mhuff @ 11:10pm: Keeping busy.
Whenever Paul goes out of town, I feel like indulging myself (and Caleb) in whatever overpermissive excesses we usually avoid with ease--things like going out to lunch or participating in low-end consumer therapy (like buying a $2 stuffed Santa at the Hobby Lobby) or going to movies. We did the former two yesterday, and tonight we did the latter.

We saw Astro Boy, which I am comfortable giving a solid two stars (out of five), the two main drawbacks being Nicholas Cage and a few too many plot holes for comfort. But it had just the right number of robots (which number, in case you're wondering, is approximately 700), and Caleb was absolutely enchanted. When the credits rolled, he pumped his scrawny fist into the air and exclaimed, "Dat was a CWOOL movie, Mama!" He talked all the way home about being a robot superhero daddy when he grows up, and then he described the plot in utmost detail to Paul on the phone.

He's an entirely charming child. (Who knew that I would be lovestruck by a boy obsessed with robots of all things? You have to believe me when I say it's cuter than it sounds.)

Other movie highlights:
  • We were the only people in the theater, so I was totally unabashed about both Caleb's cheering and my frequent texting during the movie.
  • The theater has $1 popcorn (and drinks) on Tuesdays. Score.
  • Caleb responded to every single emotion in the movie by making vast generalizations: "Dis is such a sad movie, Mama." "He's SUPER FAST!" "Poor Toby, Mama."

I love my boy. Let me know if you see any robot t-shirts floating around out there (although I'm suddenly feeling certain that my near future includes freezer paper stenciling and making robot t-shirts on my own--maybe enough for the whole family!) (because I need to make more work for myself the week before Christmas).
